The forest is
where we start with our log furniture.
Within the cool beautiful forest, we find lodge pole pine trees
from the northwest, and our aspen is found in
Colorado and Utah.
The Aspen Forests
are a very important part of the forest ecosystem.
Aspens are generally the first trees
to grow in a burned out area. Unlike conifers, Aspens grow from root
stock, or "suckers," rather than from seed. this gives them a head start over
the other forest plants as the Aspen's root stock is rarely killed
during a fire. The Aspen is a deciduas tree, losing it's leaves each
fall. This helps make the soil of an Aspen forest very rich and fertile
for other plants. The Aspen leaves filter sunlight for the forest
floor, so a variety of other plants can grow as well. Pines, Spruce,
small bushes, grasses and wild flowers. The Aspen provides valuable
forage for Elk and Deer herds, while the underlying
plants attract and feed a variety of smaller forest denizens such as
mice, rabbits, or voles. These of course attract bobcats, coyotes, and
mountain lions. You can begin to get a small picture of how without one
of these - you lose all of these! One other interesting fact.....
The largest living
thing in the world is an Aspen Tree in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.
It's an Aspen Tree, with a recorded 41,000 trees off of one root stock!
Amazing! That whole forest is actually only one tree with many
branches.
Above is a photo of Lodgepole pine
needles. Lodgepole pine is used throughout the
log furniture industry. It is a slow growing wood, which yields a tighter
grain pattern than most pines, making it a harder and straighter growing
wood.
The lodgepole pine is a very flexible wood that was once
used by the native people to build teepees and lodges, hence its name.
It grows 30 to 35 meters high and lives for approximately 200 years. Its needles are
strongly twisted. Its cones have scales with a curved prickle that is
held closed by a resin bond. To open, the cones need to be exposed to
intense heat from a wildfire or from direct sunlight. Most pure stands
are therefore established on burn areas. The lodgepole pine is found in
western Canada and the northwestern United States. It is found in pure, sometimes very dense
stands, and on different types of soils. Its wood is soft to moderately
hard and light yellow in color. An important source of timber, it is
used in construction and for pulp wood and after treatment with
preservatives, for railway ties and poles.
We carefully
inspect and select - or hand-pick - and harvest
all of the logs used in the manufacture of our
log furniture. They are brought to our
factory in Kalispell, Montana for processing
into our beautiful log furniture.
Before you visit our beautiful and unique
furniture on-line showrooms, I would like to say a few words about pure
log furniture.
The art of
designing and building furniture from logs takes
years to learn. It takes constant
concentration from the harvest, all the way
through the hand-crafting process. Each
log has to be carefully "read." The
proportions, tapers, cracks, bends, and colors -
all have to be understood and properly
expressed. Each and every piece of our
furniture is a unique one-of-a-kind creation due
just to those "readings" stated above.
Furniture Finishes:
Your furniture will be coated with a sanding sealer, then finished with a
high-quality flat lacquer. For an additional charge, gloss,
semi-gloss lacquer, or an oil finish is available!
Our spray-room
techniques have been refined to provide an exceptionally smooth, durable
and beautiful finish. Staining or white-washing are options you may
want to consider. We will work closely with you to achieve the right
color. Usually it works best for you to pick a color from
"Minwax"® brand stain. "Minwax"® offers a wide
variety of colors and is available in most hardware or building supply
stores. Click on the link below to see the stain options
available.
Another treatment you
may wish to consider is "Character." What is
"Character" in a log? Well, it's the natural twists,
turns, curves, burls, knotholes, etc., that make a log a log! Above is a sample of character in three lamps - the lamps are all alike, but the
bases all have different "Character!" You must specify if you wish
character, and a quotation will be given to you based upon how much
Character you want, and where this Character is to be located!
